The Blog The Weekly Musings of a Curious Mind

Mum, Ma, Madre, Mother, Mom – help is at hand with random Mums!

old lady

Its 9:45am and we have been travelling all night. We have just survived the icicles of the overnight bus from The Andes to the coast. Then we squeezed into a big old battered 1950’s car, to brave the check points on the 3 hour journey from Venezuela to Colombia, and that is where it happened. We found another mum. (more…)

Good life feature: How to change the world, one orangutan at a time

Jessica McKelson

I am so pleased to bring you this interview!

Jessica is someone who has dedicated her life to her passion and done a really good job of it! I have been drooling over the tours and gorgeous pics of the animals, so I highly recommend checking out her links below.

What was the catalyst for your Good Life Crisis?

Ten years ago (age 20) I travelled to Indonesia to learn more about orangutans (as I was working with these animals at Melbourne Zoo). I was shocked by the issues that affected the orangutan and its rainforest home, such as the huge scale deforestation.

What is freedom? (and do you need to be in the Caribbean to feel it?)

Puerto Columbia (22)

Free at last!

I am coming to terms with this immense sense of freedom, and it feels pretty damn good! It has got me thinking about life and perspective and I thought I would share it with you (plus a couple of travel snaps!).

Dee Britton Family

This weeks passion interview may give you itchy feet! I took some time to ask a few questions of Dee Britton whose Good Life Crisis came in the form of some family travel!

What was the catalyst for your Good Life Crisis?

We had been thinking of doing an extended trip around Australia for some time but it was only ever a distant dream. In late 2010 our landlord gave us notice (more…)

Good life feature: Lifestyle design with share trading

Louise Bedford

I love this type of story, and partly because share trading is something that I know very little about. We took some time to interview the very inspirational Louise Bedford… enjoy!

What was the catalyst for your Good Life Crisis?

Over the course of a few short months, I progressively lost the use of my arms through an unexplained tendon condition. I found that even simple tasks such as opening doors had become a day to day painful struggle and in the end, I had to quit my terrific job. Life was looking bleak indeed.

I went through a period of darkness, unable to picture my future, and certain that the loss of the use of my arms meant that my hopes of becoming a mother had to be put aside.

I had previously been (more…)

Consumerism vs culture… a snapshot of Caracas

No Kidnapping

In the queue for immigration in Caracas the thing that made us stand out as tourists was our flip flops, skirt & shorts. City Venezuelans dress well, despite the heat everyone wears closed shoes and long pants.

The influence of the US is apparent in Caracas, people covet designer labels, have massive American cars and three out of four eateries are junk food outlets peddling deep fried chicken, burgers, pizza and pasta.

“Try to avoid being kidnapped”

Before we came here we heard a lot of warnings about Venezuela and in particular (more…)
