14 things I have learned in 32 years – the birthday blog!
The last three weeks have been a whirlwind and I have much to tell you! I had a gorgeous surprise birthday present when Mum took me to the National Achievers Congress, a three day event that blew my mind and I will fill you in on all the juicy details in the weeks to come.
My brain must have been in overdrive because I was sick for the next week and even missed my birthday!
Anyway I am here now with my birthday blog and wanted to share 32 things I have learned in 32 years, but 32 is a lot! So here are 14 things for your reading pleasure…
Success is all about momentum
It can be very hard to get something new moving, but the momentum that you create with all that work is what will give you the potential for success. Every little bit of energy you give will expand and grow until it takes on a life of its own.
Even when you are working your guts out and don’t seem to be getting anywhere, you are still creating momentum and it all pays off in the end. I saw multi-millionaire Peter Spann speak recently he said “overnight success takes 15 years”.
You are the age you are – there is no such thing as too late.

On our radio show each week Bill Rankin “Society Spy” shares with us the 10+ parties he has attended during the week. He is 80 and in between parties he is up at the farm planting trees and digging holes for fence posts.
It is never too late to learn an instrument or a language, join the circus, start a business, master a new craft or get fit… take it from Bill!
Enjoy the ride
The success you dream of will only give you a moment in time. The search for what’s possible never ends. Enjoy the ride.
Don’t be afraid to screw it all up
You could make amazing things happen or you could screw it all up and you will never know which until you try. So… what’s next?!
Everything is going to be ok!
If you are new to the blog, my life altered when my gorgeous little brother died suddenly 10 months ago. It was the saddest thing I could ever imagine and for a while it was hard to fathom the possibility of being truly happy again knowing that I wouldn’t have him to share it with.
Of course with everything bad thing in life there is usually some opportunity for growth and over the last few months I have found a new strength and confidence in knowing that I can recover from anything, that I will be ok…
…until I die that is and then I am sure I won’t mind either way.
Do the things you dream of
Working on the things you are passionate about gives you a sense of peace and fulfilment that is unlike anything else.
Love is the answer
If you don’t have enough love in your life, work out why and get some. It really is the best bit.
People are inherently good
I know that many people don’t believe this, but I do. I believe that people may lose sight of their “goodness” due to fear and insecurity and that collectively we allow certain horrible behaviours to flourish, but overall deep down we want the best for each other.
Perception is everything
How you look at the world will determine the amount of opportunities that you see (create), as well as your ability to make them a success. If you want to change the results, you need to change your mindset.
Public speaking usually seems worse in your head… Usually.
I used to cry when I had to speak in public which is never a good look unless you are at a funeral. Until recently even though I wouldn’t cry I still feel like I am making a complete arse out of myself when I speak, which would make me even more nervous and paranoid.
What I realised however on recent reflection (recorded sessions!) is that it probably seems much worse in my head than it does to those watching/listening. That is the latest development anyway!
Trapeze is unbelievably awesome!
Just saying.
Make your health a priority
Eat well, exercise and get enough sleep, no excuses. Business, family and relationships are all easier when your body feels good.
Don’t believe the hype
We are constantly bombarded with marketing for things that will make us sexier, cooler and happier. Buy, buy, buy. Consume, consume, consume. Hype, hype, hype. Wherever possible, switch off the media “noise” and think for yourself.
Be silly. Every day.
Miss out on this one and you will succumb to a terrible affliction… being a suckface! The sillier you are the more energy you will have, the more you will laugh and the better your life will be.
Well, there are 14 things I have learned in 32 years! If you would like to give me a little present please share this blog on Facebook or Twitter and if you really feel like creating some major warm fuzzies please visit Children’s Promise and donate one hour of your salary to help disadvantaged kids.
Thanks so much!
Lots of love,
Serena xx

My 1st Post!!!
I read about Serena in the Sun a month or two ago and I have just bought the book. I haven’t been able to put it down. I’m really excited about making some changes to my life and feel I have made some very achievable goals. I have stopped worrying about money, as I realise I don’t have to change too much to feel in control. Luckily I have a very tech savvy son, so i’ve got it made!! Everyone I have told is so supportive. Cheers! Lesley

Naturally when I saw your little ad in a magazine, I immediately wanted to know a bit more. Now I am intrigued and I can’t help but imagine how different my life would be if I retire in 12 months and still have the money to fund my retirement and still be healthy to enjoy it. I will buy your book and let you know what I think.

Hey Marissa,
Welcome to the blog, I hope you enjoy the book!
Cheers,

Hi Serena! Sammie here! Belated Happy birthday! Hope you’re all well now.
I loved reading your book which was amazingly helpful. I’ve read quite a few books around this topic now and I have to say yours was one of the most sincere personal finance book I’ve encountered so far. It’s simplicity was so powerful I felt empowered just reading the book.

Hey Sammie!

Oh Really??? I want to see them both! Let me guess, it’s in Sydney though…I’d love to see Richard Branson and I’m just about to start Tim Ferris’s book! hehe maybe I need to take unpaid leave off work!
By the way just checking if you got my email before I keep emailing the wrong address ;p
